Dating App Tinder is Fighting Fake Profiles

Dating app Tinder takes a new measure to combat fake accounts. Users will have their identity verified so that others can be sure that their account is genuine. The service will initially be voluntary, Tinder announced.   Tinder already tested the account verification in Japan in 2019 and will roll out the service worldwide in the coming months. "We know that one of the most valued things Tinder can do to help members feel harmless is to give them more sureness that their matches are real and to give them more controller over who they interact with", it reads on Tinder. According to the British channel Sky News, the accounts will be controlled by computers and humans. For example, algorithms will check the user's photos, while the user may also be asked to take some selfies in real...

Chipmaker Qualcomm Makes Offer for Car Technology Manufacturer

Chip company Qualcomm has made a $4.6 billion offer for car technology maker Veoneer. The board of the Swedish company previously supported a lower proposal of 3.8 billion dollars from the Canadian car company Magna.   Veoneer makes systems for self-driving cars. For example, the Swedes make it possible for drivers to drive a car without their hands on the wheel. They also make technology that helps prevent collisions. In a letter to the board of Veoneer, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon writes that his company Veoneer has long admired. "We believe that together we would be in a unique position to further fuel the industry's competitiveness," Amon wrote. Veoneer was not immediately available for comment. Magna declined to comment.

European Complaint Against New WhatsApp Terms of Use

The European consumer organization BEUC has filed a complaint with the European Commission against the terms of use of WhatsApp. That chat app recently introduced new, controversial privacy rules.   WhatsApp introduced new privacy rules for users outside the European Union on May 15. These are controversial because whoever accepts the new terms of use permits to share WhatsApp metadata with Facebook, the parent company of the messaging service. It is not about the content of the messages but about information such as who you are talking to or which device you are using. That can be interesting for advertisers. Anyone who does not accept the new terms and conditions will no longer be able to use WhatsApp after a while. Although the European GDPR rules in principle protect European c...

Google Also Sued by US States Over Play Store

Prosecutors from several US states may file lawsuits against Google as early as next week. That report Reuters news agency based on insiders.   The accusers accuse the tech company of distorting competition by managing its Play Store for Android apps. The prosecutors want to join lawsuits from game company Epic Games and from two groups of developers of apps with the case. The case follows complaints from developers. They think it is unfair that Google, just like Apple on iOS, wants a commission if Android users buy an app or subscribe to an app. Originally, Google's operating system was more open than Apple's, but the company behind Android has recently tightened its rules and checks more closely for compliance. Google defends itself by stating that Android is "the only major ope...

German Amazon Workers Strike for Better Wages During the Discount Fest

Hundreds of Amazon employees in Germany are on strike during Prime Day, the annual discount days when it is extra busy. They demand a wage increase of 4.5 percent and better working conditions.   The Verdi union is the driving force behind this strike in 7 of Amazon's 16 distribution centres in Germany. Since 2013, the German union has been protesting against the American online giant's low wages and poor working conditions. For as long, Verdi has been trying to enforce a collective bargaining agreement with Amazon, so far without success. This agreement between trade unions and employers' organizations applies to all employees in that sector. This should ensure greater equality between the parties through collective bargaining. Amazon makes billions from the extra orders during t...

WhatsApp Groups are Calling on Jewish Youth for Violence Against Arabs in Israel

In Israeli areas, far-right Jewish youth have set up WhatsApp groups to perpetrate organized violence against Arabs. This is evident from an investigation by FakeReporter, an Israeli organization that fights against fake news on social media.   Majd Khalifeh follows the Israeli-Palestinian conflict closely and, based on his expertise in social media, explains more in the "Late news". The violence between Israel and Palestine is going from bad to worse. Rockets have been flying to and from Gaza for a week and a half, but it doesn't stop there. Jews and Arabs are now also taking to the streets in Israel to fight against each other, resulting in horrific violence. Until recently, Jews and Arabs in Israel mostly lived peacefully side by side, but very little of that remains. FakeRepor...

Russian Regulator is Not Blocking Twitter

Russian regulator Roskomnadzor has decided not to block Twitter in Russia after the social medium has removed a lot of banned content.   According to Russia, Twitter did too little to remove videos with child pornography or drug abuse messages. Roskomnadzor had previously decided to slow down Twitter's speed until the company wanted to cooperate to remove messages banned in Russia. Twitter would now have deleted 91 percent of those messages, and so the speed is increased again. The regulator warned Google and Facebook that banned messages on the channels of those tech companies must also be deleted. Otherwise, YouTube and Facebook will also be slowed down. An estimated 3 percent of Russians use Twitter. Among them, Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and his allies.

US Probe Heading Back to Earth With Grit Space Rock

A US space probe that has collected material from an asteroid is heading back to Earth. The OSIRIS-REx will turn its back on the space rock Bennu on Monday.   After a long flight, it will land on Earth in September 2023, after which scientists can study the grit. The OSIRIS-REx had sucked up about 60 grams of pebbles and dust from the surface of the potato-shaped asteroid Bennu in October. That happened nearly 333 million kilometres from Earth. The asteroid samples are collected in a container on board the probe. Scientists want to study the grit to get a better picture of the origin of our solar system, and they may find clues to the origin of life on Earth. It is the first time for Americans to collect material from an asteroid. She preceded Japan with the missions Hayabusa and ...

Investors are Looking to Tech Companies Apple and Facebook

iPhone maker Apple and social media company Facebook will update their performance in the past period on Wednesday.   After a record quarter, Apple expects significantly lower sales and profits in what has traditionally been the company's weakest quarter of the year. With Facebook, investors mainly look at the number of users and whether the online advertising market has continued its recovery. Apple had its highest-ever sales in the holiday quarter of 2020. Every year the turnover falls in the months after that period. In addition, the company has not launched any new products on the market in recent months. That only happened last week. Then Apple also announced that an update for its mobile operating system, iOS, will be available. Apps that collect information from users must ...

SpaceX Brings Four Astronauts to the International Space Station

Space company SpaceX is transporting four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). The Crew Dragon Capsule with the space travellers has to depart from the American Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.   The launch was actually scheduled for Thursday but was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. The astronauts are taken to space with the same launch vehicle that was used in the previous mission. Costs can be reduced considerably by reusing such equipment. The arrival of the astronauts means that it is bustling on the ISS for the time being. The current crew will not return to Earth for a few days. As a result, there are eleven people on board for a short time. The ISS has never had more than thirteen space travellers at the same time. The new team will stay o...
