Zelensky: Stay Away From Military Facilities in Occupied Territory

Ukrainians in Russian-occupied territory should stay away from military facilities as much as possible. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on his compatriots to do so, also mentioning the people of Crimea. There were explosions and a fire on this peninsula, which was annexed by Russia, on Tuesday, including at a Russian ammunition depot. Zelensky hopes to limit the number of civilian deaths if people avoid places of military importance. "The fewer opportunities the occupiers have to harm and kill Ukrainians, the faster we can end this war and liberate our country." Russia said Tuesday's blasts were the result of Ukrainian sabotage. Last week there were also several explosions at a military airport in Crimea, probably due to a Ukrainian missile attack. According to ...

Gas Prices Fall Slightly After Nord Stream Gas Supply Resumes

Gas prices have fallen slightly as Russia returns to sending gas to Europe via the Nord Stream gas pipeline.   Immediately at the opening of the leading gas exchange in Amsterdam, the price fell to 6.5 percent but recovered slightly. Around 8:15 am, gas was just under 4 percent cheaper per megawatt hour. Nord Stream gas pipeline, which rounds under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, has been closed for scheduled maintenance for the past week and a half. It was then eagerly anticipated whether Russia would reopen the gas tap after the maintenance was completed. In the first hour, 30 percent of the normal amount of gas came from Russia, but the gas supply gradually increased. From the orders for the gas supply, it can be concluded that Russia wants to send 40 percent of the usua...

Putin in Tehran for Summit with Counterparts from Iran and Turkey

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Tehran for a summit with his counterparts from Iran and Turkey, Ebrahim Raisi and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.   It is Putin's first foreign trip outside the former Soviet Union since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. The summit is held to discuss the struggle in Syria, but the war in Ukraine and frictions between Iran and Arab countries are also emerging as topics of discussion. Erdogan is talking with Putin about the possibility of safely transporting Ukrainian grain from Odesa, in particular, across the Black Sea to the world market. Putin also visits Iran's most powerful man, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both leaders want to strengthen ties. Iranian leaders see the Kremlin as an ally against US influence in the Middle East. US President J...

Putin Orders Continuation of Offensive After Luhansk Capture

After capturing the strategically important city of Lysychansk in eastern Ukraine, Russia has announced the continuation of the offensive in other parts of the neighbouring country.   The Russian troops have completely transported the Luhansk oblast (region). “The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are ongoing with the military special operation,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu said Monday at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. Moscow only talks about a "special operation" in Ukraine and not about a war. The Russian troops must "carry out their missions according to the plans already approved," Putin said. I hope that in their sectors everything will go as in Luhansk.” With the capture of Lysychansk and associated control of all of Luhansk, the Kremlin achieved an...

Russian Minister: New Iron Curtain in the Making in Europe

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says a new Iron Curtain is being hung between the West and Russia. "It's practically already there," complained the minister. He warned the West to "act with caution".   Relations were already not good when Russia attacked neighbouring Ukraine on February 24. It led to further resentment towards Russia in Western countries and to a series of severe economic sanctions. Western companies have stopped their activities in Russia and travelling to and from that country has become very difficult. Western powers have also made the fight against President Vladimir Putin's Russia a priority in defence, security and foreign policy. The term Iron Curtain was used shortly after World War II, most notably in a 1946 speech by British leader Winston Churchi...

NATO Chief: Unprecedented Russian Brutality in Ukraine

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has urged military alliance leaders to continue to support Ukraine amid the Russian attack.   "It is extremely important that we stand ready to provide support as Ukraine faces an atrocity that we have not seen in Europe since World War II," Stoltenberg said shortly before the start of the NATO summit in the Spanish capital Madrid. NATO allies have already funnelled billions of euros worth of weapons to Ukraine. The alliance will come to the summit with an additional joint package, including secure communications equipment, anti-drone systems and training to help Ukraine transition to more modern Western weapons. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky, who will address NATO leaders, tweeted that he had emphasized to Stoltenberg the importance of Ukraine...

Russia Threatens Serious Consequences After Lithuanian Import Ban

Russia threatens Lithuania with "serious consequences" over the transit ban to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Russian Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev says countermeasures will be taken soon.   As of Saturday, Lithuania has stopped the supply of coal and metals from Russia to Kaliningrad by rail, among other things. According to Lithuania, this is in line with the European embargoes that apply to those Russian products. Rail via Lithuania is the main way of transporting goods to the exclave via Russia. "Our measures are going to have a serious negative impact on the population of Lithuania," Patrushev said. Russia also filed a protest with the European Union on Tuesday over the Lithuanian ban. EU ambassador Markus Ederer had to come to the Russian Ministry of Foreign...

Gas Price Rises Further Due to Concerns About Russian Deliveries

European gas prices rose further on Monday after the strong rise of more than 40 percent last week. Moscow's throttling of Russia's gas supplies to several European countries is fueling concerns about Europe's ability to replenish its gas supplies for the winter season.   On the European stock exchange in Amsterdam, gas became 6 percent more expensive at 124.75 euros per megawatt-hour. The Russian state gas company Gazprom announced last week that it would further reduce deliveries to Germany. Since Thursday, only about 40 percent of the normal amount has been supplied via Nord Stream 1, Germany's most important pipeline for Russian gas. Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller warned that the situation will not improve any time soon. According to him, there is currently no solution f...

IEA: Russia Earned $20 Billion From Oil Exports in May

Russia earned about 20 billion dollars from the export of crude oil and petroleum products in May. That is an increase of 11 percent compared to April, according to calculations by the International Energy Agency (IEA).   Russia is benefiting from the high oil prices. The IEA states that the total income of Russian oil exports is therefore again about the same as before the invasion of Ukraine. Because of the war, Western customers buy much less oil from Russia, but this is partly compensated by larger purchases by, for example, China and India. Those countries demand significant discounts from Russia. The IEA further announced that global oil demand is expected to be higher next year than before the outbreak of the corona crisis, with the average daily demand of 101.6 million bar...

Microsoft Withdraws Further from Russia Due to War

The American software and technology group Microsoft is further withdrawing from Russia because of the war in Ukraine. In March, the company already stopped selling new products and services in the country, but continued to support existing customers and maintain offices. “As a result of the changes in the economic outlook and the impact on our business in Russia, we have decided to significantly scale down our business in Russia,” the company said. Microsoft also states that it will continue to fulfil its existing contractual obligations with Russian customers and that the suspension of new sales will remain in effect. More than 400 employees will be affected by the decision, a Microsoft spokesperson said. “We are working closely with affected employees to ensure they are treated with...
