Moscow Bans Airlines From 36 Countries

In response to Western sanctions following Russia's attack on Ukraine, Moscow decided on Monday that airlines from 36 countries are no longer allowed in Russian airspace.   This was announced by the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsija. EU countries, among others, decided last week that civil aircraft operated by Russian airlines and registered in Russia are no longer allowed over European airspace. Earlier on Monday, Brussels Airlines reported that an airspace closure by the Russians would cause little inconvenience to the company. After all, the company does not offer flights to Asia. There were plans to fly again in a month's time to the Russian cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. There are exceptions to this ban, for example, with special permission from the Russian Min...

EU Wants to Punish Russian President Putin Personally

The European Union wants to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin directly and personally.   The president will soon no longer be able to use any assets placed in the EU, according to insiders, the EU member states have agreed. That would also apply to his foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. The foreign ministers have yet to determine the sanctions list on Friday afternoon, but that is a formality.

Donald Trump Calls Putin’s Actions Genius

"Genius", "wonderful", "very bright". Those are the words used by former US President Donald Trump to describe Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions over the conflict in Ukraine.   During an interview with a conservative radio show, Trump was asked what his opinion is about the actions of the White House regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The former president first insisted that things actually went wrong when the elections were "rigged". But then went on to say that Putin's actions are "genius". Putin declares much of Ukraine independent. Oh, that's beautiful. So, Putin now says that much of Ukraine is independent. I said, "How smart is that?" And he goes in (with troops, ed.) and becomes a peacekeeper. We could use that on our southern border. That's the strongest peacekeepi...

NATO Boss: Russia Prepares for Attack on Ukraine

Everything indicates that Russia is still preparing for an attack on Ukraine, says NATO boss Jens Stoltenberg. According to him, Moscow will not stop at recognizing two renegade Ukrainian regions.   Security in Europe has not been in such danger for a generation as it is today, the secretary-general of the Western alliance says. The fact that the Kremlin has requested and received parliamentary permission to act by force outside its borders makes it even more dangerous, according to Stoltenberg. He "continues to call on Russia" to change its mind and turn around. "We are seeing more and more troops leaving their camps and in combat formation and combat-ready," the Norwegian NATO chief said.

Russian Army: We Killed Five Saboteurs from Ukraine, But Ukraine Denies

The Russian army reported Monday that it had killed five "saboteurs" from Ukraine on Russian soil.   Also, according to the army, two Ukrainian army vehicles tried to cross the border. Ukraine formally denied the facts on Monday. "During the fighting, five people belonging to a group of saboteurs and spies who had violated Russia's border were eliminated," the Russian army said, adding that the incident took place in the Rostov region at 6 a.m. local time. But Ukraine formally denied on Monday that it sent soldiers to Russia. "None of our soldiers has crossed the border into the Russian Federation, and none of them has been killed today," a senior official at Ukraine's Interior Ministry said.

Moscow is Forced to Respond to Denial of Security Demands

If the US does not agree to Russia's key security demands, Moscow has no choice but to respond, including militarily. That is what Russia said on Thursday. Moscow, meanwhile, handed over its written response on security in Europe to US Ambassador John Sullivan.   On January 26, the US government had provided Moscow with a written response about Russia's security concerns. However, Washington had not responded to Russia's demand that NATO not expand further east. Instead, the US proposes talks on missile deployment in Europe and mutual restrictions on military manoeuvres. Washington also proposes that Moscow inspect certain military infrastructure of concern in Europe. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that "in the absence of a willingness on the US side to agree to clear...

Emmanuel Macron Confirms Negotiations on Minsk Peace Agreement Continue on Thursday

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Tuesday that negotiations on the Minsk peace agreement would continue on Thursday. He met on Tuesday with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the protracted crisis.   Macron also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. So on Thursday, talks will follow in the Normandy format, with France and Germany as mediators. According to Macron, the peace agreement is the only sustainable solution and represents the best protection for Ukraine's territorial integrity. After his double visits to Moscow and Kyiv, he expressed his belief in "concrete solutions" that could lead to a dismantling of the crisis. But achieving such de-escalation requires a new common security architecture for Europe, Macron said. Zelensky ...

Putin Heads to Olympics Opening to Strengthen Ties with Xi

Russian President Vladimir Putin will fly to China this week to host the Olympic Games. He will have a face-to-face meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping there for the first time since the start of the pandemic.   The Kremlin reports that the leaders have a "common vision" on international security. The summit between world leaders comes at a sensitive time. In the run-up to the prestigious sporting event in China, fears are growing that Russia is preparing for an invasion of Ukraine. The Russians have gathered a large force on the border with that Eastern European country. Russia denies that it has plans for an invasion and blames the West. That would not adequately address concerns about Russia's national security. The Russian government feels threatened by the expansion of NAT...

Ukraine: Russia Behind Fake Bombings to Sow Panic

Ukraine says it has been the victim of a number of false bomb threats in recent days designed to spread panic in society. The country blames Russia for the reports.   These came as concerns grew over a possible Russian invasion, Ukraine's security services in Kyiv said in a statement. The accusation comes on the same day that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart Antony Blinken spoke in Geneva about rising tensions over Ukraine and NATO. According to the ministers, it was an open discussion, and they both wanted it to continue soon. Lavrov said shortly after the meeting that he hopes tensions can ease after this meeting. Last week, Ukraine already accused Russia of being behind a major cyber attack and of having evidence of it. The attack hit several compu...
