Josh Beames – Chasing the Unknown
What inspires you?
I draw inspiration in the fact that there’re endless possibilities. There’s been so many things that I have experienced and witnessed that I just did not know existed and I’m sure there are still many more to come!
Some photographers say that they see the world differently, and that they have a different perspective on life. What is your perspective on the world and on life?
Ever since I got into photography I can most definitely say I see the world differently to how I once perceived it. I find fascination in the strangest places and perspectives that once would of been unnoticed to my eye.
What type of camera do you recommend? Equipment?
Over the years Ive tried out many camera brands. I run work shops so I am still always helping clients with their cameras and I have gained a great understanding of most competitors out there. This leads me to my camera brand of choice and that is.. NIKON!
By far the best brand out there in my opinion. I have been using Nikon products for years now and they have it worked out! From a computable grip to a powerful system. You can’t go wrong.

What are some favourite things about being a photographer? What are some challenges you’ve encountered?
There are both positive and negatives with being a photographer. But, thankfully the pros outweigh the cons!
The negatives mostly consist of being in a creative rut. Looking at your own work and never being happy. In turn – this is a good thing. It pushes us to be critical on our own work and grow… but geez its a pain in the ass!
The positives? Well I dont even know where to start! From traveling the world to working with some great tourism groups. Photography is an excuse to get out and explore. To stand in the bitter cold under a stormy sky and capture lightning over head. To be dangerously close to a moody ocean and snap that epic shot and see the power of mother nature up close! Sure, you can do that without a camera. But put a camera in you hand and try and get a shot… I’m sure you will be in that moment much longer and see far more then you would of without one.
What would be some tips you would give to a beginning photographer?
If you are just starting out – don’t be afraid to fail. Try and try again until you see progress, that is what will inspire you to continue. Trust me, it is so damn worth sticking it out and trying to succeed rather then giving up and missing out on potentially a life hoppy or possibly, a sucessful career.
Do you find yourself always looking at the World wondering how it would look as a photograph?
One thing I have deffinitly noticed is that everything I look at I try and work out how I would capture it. aways looking for a unique perspective! “That spoon would look so good from this perspective..” Haha.
How does it feel to do what you love for a living?
I have some really great jobs and fantastic employers. I learnt the most from my previous family owned retail job, Jean Jail. A small locally owned business turned into hugely successful online store all from hard work and a vision. I was able to take away an idea of what it takes to run a successful business.
I am so grateful for what I learnt It feels incredible to be doing what I love for a living and to have a clear vision of where I want it to be with photography. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, says Josh Beames!!
What can we expect from you in the future?
I always push my self to try new things. Striving to be better then I was last week, always trying to out-do myself. Im slowing getting into video and might even start a youtube channel down the track. Remember, The world is an oyster. 😉
