Erdogan and Macron Attempt to Settle Disputes

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron seized the opportunity of Monday's NATO summit to have "long" talks, Macron said.   The two NATO allies frequently clashed over the past year, and sometimes harsh words were spoken. The chat was really going on, Macron's staff say. The two are said to have spoken for 45 minutes in the hopes of "clarifying their differences of opinion about Turkey's actions in Syria, Libya and Azerbaijan, and against Greece and Cyprus. To continue with clarity and respect," said the French president.

Turkey Responds to Chair Incident With EU Commission President Von der Leyen

Turkey denies that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was deliberately not offered a seat during a visit by top European leaders Michel and Von der Leyen to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week.   According to the Turkish authorities, the European protocol services agreed to the arrangement of the chairs. During a visit to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Von der Leyen had to sit on a sofa on Tuesday and not like European Council President Charles Michel on a chair next to Erdogan. After images of an astonished von der Leyen started circulating on social media, #sofagate was born. On social media, there was a lot of criticism of the images and accusations of, among other things, gender discrimination. But Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut C...

A Turkish Employee of the US Consulate Convicted in Istanbul

A Turkish employee of the US Consulate in Istanbul, Metin Topuz, has been sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison for helping a terrorist organization.   The trial of Topuz is part of frictions between Washington and Ankara. The two powers also have lingering arguments over Syria and Turkish arms purchases in Russia. The US embassy in Ankara immediately stated that it was disappointed because no evidence had been furnished against Topuz. Hopefully, the verdict will be reviewed soon, the embassy said. Since a failed coup in 2016, President Erdogan's government has been vigorously prosecuting a move by an old political rival, American-based Fethullah Gülen. Erdogan accuses him of being behind the failed coup and has labelled the movement as terrorist.

Turkish Government Announces Lockdown Around Public Holiday

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a four-day lockdown across Turkey in an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus.   The lockdown should prevent people from flocking to celebrate the Islamic Sugar Feast of breaking the fast. The holiday Eid al-Fitr is the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. This falls on the evening of May 23 and the following day this year. But according to Erdogan, major prayer meetings may not be held in mosques until May 29. Turkey has already diagnosed more than 150,000 infections and more than 4,000 patients have died from the effects of the virus. About 110,000 patients have already been cured. On Monday, 1150 infections were diagnosed in 24 hours. The virus has reached its peak in Turkey. 1.6 million tests have already been car...

Highest Jurisdiction in Turkey: Wikipedia Blocking is Illegal

The Constitutional Court, the highest jurisdiction in Turkey, on Thursday, found illegal access to the Wikipedia internet cyclopaedia blocked by the government.   In April 2017, the Turkish government blocked all access to Wikipedia for "national security reasons". The cause was two articles that established a link between Ankara and extremist organisations. The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organisation behind the website, appealed this. With a majority of ten against six members, the Constitutional Court ultimately ruled that the blocking is against freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution of Turkey. A court of the first instance, which had rejected a request to lift the access ban in May 2017, must now re-examine the case, taking into account the findings of ...

Erdogan Asks Turks in Europe for Record Number of Votes

Erdogan Asks Turks in Europe for Record Number of Votes. In Germany, President Erdogan was not allowed to appear, and now the election campaigner evaded Sarajevo. Thousands of foreigners were called upon to give terror organisations and their henchmen an "Ottoman slap" - by choosing Erdogan in June, reports The English News.   Just over a month before the elections in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asked the Turks abroad for massive support. "Are you willing to miss the terrorist organisations and their local and foreign stooges an Ottoman slap?" Erdogan told thousands of cheering Turks living in the Bosnian Sarajevo. "Are you willing to encourage me with a record number of votes in the presidential election?" The administrative and parliamentary elections on June 24, i...
