UN Chief: Absurd War in Ukraine Must be Ended

UN chief António Guterres urged on Tuesday for an end to the "absurd war" that started about a month ago with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.   The United Nations Secretary-General warned that the conflict is "going nowhere soon" and the Ukrainian people are "going through living hell." "Continuing the war in Ukraine is morally unacceptable, politically indefensible and militarily nonsensical," Guterres told reporters. Even if the Russians capture the port city of Mariupol, he still believes that the war cannot be won. "Ukraine cannot be conquered city by city, street by street, house by house."

Wales Bans Physical Punishment of Children

In Wales, it is now illegal to physically punish children. Any form of corporal punishment, such as hitting, slapping and shaking, is illegal in the country from today/Monday.   The so-called "smacking ban" has been introduced in the Children Act 2020 and means the end of the "reasonable punishment". It means that children receive the same protection against abuse. The law also applies to everyone, including people visiting Wales. Parents or adults responsible for children face criminal charges if they physically punish the children in any way. Critics say the law will criminalize parents, but the Welsh government insists the law will just protect children. "The UN Convention on the Child's Rights makes clear that children have the right to be protected from harm and injury, inclu...

Putin Praises Armed Forces and Appears in Olympic Stadium

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appeared at the Olympic Luzhniki Stadium in southwestern Moscow to praise the armed forces for their "special military operation" in Ukraine.   He appeared at a concert being held at the stadium to celebrate the eighth anniversary of what Russians call the reunification of Crimea with Russia. The stadium, then called Lenin Stadium, was built for the 1980 Olympics. The Russian government celebrates every year the capture of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula in 2014. State television appeared to cut Putin's speech, and cameras suddenly turned back on performers.

Erdogan Invites Putin to Turkey Consultations

On Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to peace talks in Turkey with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky.   In a telephone conversation with Putin, Erdogan said a lasting ceasefire could lead to a longer-term solution. Erdogan's office reported this on Thursday. The Turkish president spoke to Putin earlier and then already suggested that the fight be stopped, and high-level negotiations begin. These had to be about a permanent ceasefire and evacuations of civilians, among other things. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitro Koeleba on Thursday in Lviv in western Ukraine. Cavusoglu said he hoped for a truce at the Russian port city of Mariupol, which was heavily besieged by the R...

Two American Crewmembers from Space Station ISS Started Spacewalk

Two American crewmembers from the International Space Station ISS started a spacewalk on Tuesday, as could be seen directly on NASA TV.   Kayla Barron and Raya Chari switched to their spacesuits' internal systems at 1:12 PM GMT, officially beginning a spacewalk that would last approximately 6.5 hours. The duo must assemble and install infrastructure to upgrade the solar panels, NASA says. Ultimately, the spacemeccano will have 215 kilowatts of power compared to 160 kilowatts now. For Barron, it is the second spacewalk of her career; for Chari, it is the first. Four Americans, two Russians, and one German currently live and work on the ISS on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA). According to NASA, "nothing has changed" since the Russian invasion of Ukraine concerning the spa...

Journalist Sentenced to Prison for Comparing Erdogan to Ox

Turkish journalist Sedef Kabas was sentenced Friday to 2 years and 4 months in prison to refer to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for using a proverb.   "An ox does not become king when it enters the palace, but the palace becomes a stable," Kabas had said in a TV broadcast and later tweeted. After the verdict, the court ordered her release. "Sedef Kabas is now free," her Twitter account read. By using the proverb, she was found guilty of insulting the president. Nevertheless, she used the proverb on the air in January, and shortly afterwards, she tweeted that proverb again for her 900,000 followers. The TV journalist wanted to denounce the government's crackdown on critics. The proverb may seem like an allusion to Erdogan, but the president or the presidential palace did not explic...

Cloudflare Remains Active in Russia, But Not for Everyone

After Cogent, backbone provider Lumen is also withdrawing from Russia. Cloudflare does not but says it will increase its protection and limit who will still operate it.   Lumen, like Cogent, is a backbone provider and announces that it will stop in Russia. However, it itself nuances that its digital and physical presence in the country is 'very limited'. It points to increased security risks in Russia as the main reason, although it has not yet noticed any network disruptions itself. Cloudflare says that it will remain, both in Russia and Ukraine, but with a lot of measures. For example, important encryption material has been taken from Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian data centres, which is applied remotely. The encryption itself is now done there with Keyless SSL technology, w...
