Wife of Mexican Drug Lord El Chapo Arrested

The wife of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was arrested Monday at Dulles International Airport in Virginia State, near Washington, D.C.

She is suspected of involvement in a drug network, U.S. authorities said.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, who has both American and Mexican nationality, appears before a federal judge on Tuesday. She is suspected of being involved in importing cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to the United States. In addition, she is said to have participated in two attempts to escape her husband from a Mexican prison in 2015 and 2016.

Her 63-year-old husband, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel and considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world at the time, was sentenced to life in prison in 2019. He is serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison in the U.S. state of Colorado.

Coronel Aispuro married the drug lord in 2007 when she was barely eighteen years old, and he was already on the run from the authorities. They have two daughters together, twins of nine years old.

She also continued to support her husband during his trial, although prosecutors showed that El Chapo had multiple love affairs. She launched her own clothing line in 2019 and also appeared on an American reality show about mafia families.
