Spanish Government: The Death Toll Maybe Much Higher Than 19,000

Spain still has the third-highest death toll from the new coronavirus, after the US and Italy. But the number of deaths may be much higher than the official figures show.

The different regions count in different ways. The national government is now trying to harmonize those counts. The result of this may reveal a sad truth.

According to the most recent figures released today by the Spanish Ministry of Health, 19,130 people have already died of the new coronavirus in Spain.

Spain is thus the country with the third-highest number of official deaths worldwide, after the United States (over 28,500) and Italy (over 21,600).
