Experts Call for More AI Regulation Ahead of Paris Summit

AI experts from around the world want artificial intelligence to be more regulated. They are making this call in the run-up to the significant AI summit in Paris on Monday and Tuesday.

According to them, more regulation should prevent people from losing control over artificial intelligence.

“Many in power still don’t understand that the world is closer to building generative AI than it is to figuring out how to control it,” says Max Tegmark, head of the Future of Life Institute, an international institution focused on reducing the risks of new technology. “Six years ago, many people thought that mastering language at the level of ChatGPT-4 was science fiction, and then it happened,” Tegmark says of OpenAI’s chatbot.

No binding rules

France, co-hosting the summit with India, wants governments and companies to commit to regulating AI globally but without setting binding rules. The country also wants the summit to make commitments on sustainability around AI.

A project was launched on Sunday to map the principal risks of AI and the solutions developed worldwide. According to GRASP, the project’s coordinator, around three hundred tools and technologies are currently included.

More responsible

Furthermore, in the run-up to the AI summit, Microsoft has announced the creation of a foundation in Abu Dhabi to ensure “more responsible AI.” The United Arab Emirates wants to play a leading role in the rise of AI and enter into more partnerships.

The AI summit will be held on Monday and Tuesday at the Grand Palais in Paris. Visitors from around 80 countries are expected, including US Vice President JD Vance, Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, an AI researcher, and Nobel Prize winner Demis Hassabis.
