South Korean police have been asked to arrest suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol, Yonhap news agency reported.
Investigators from South Korea‘s Anti-Corruption Bureau (CIO) were stopped at the suspended president’s home on Friday by a military unit and members of the presidential security service. After almost six hours, they blew the retreat. The suspended president has already ignored three summonses.
According to Yonhap, the police have now been asked to execute the arrest warrant but have not yet decided to do so. The CIO will request an extension of the warrant before it expires at midnight.
President Yoon Suk-yeol announced martial law in his country on the night of December 3 to 4, to the great surprise of many. A few hours later, the head of state had to withdraw martial law under pressure from parliament and street protests.
He was deposed by parliament on December 14. He officially remains president, until the Constitutional Court confirms the parliament’s decision.
