China Relaxes Travel Policy After Disappointing Retail Sales

China has relaxed the rules for many foreign travellers as part of its stimulus measures for the ailing economy. Residents of 54 countries in transit can now stay in China for ten days.

State news agency Xinhua News reported that travellers from countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Russia can now stay in the Asian region for up to 240 hours, compared to 72 to 144 hours.

The news comes shortly after disappointing retail sales figures. The Chinese government may want to boost consumption by encouraging international tourism.

Incidentally, a more relaxed travel policy applies to all citizens until the end of next year. People who travel to China for holidays, business, to visit family or friends, or to transit through the country are generally allowed to stay there for thirty days.
