The White House has lashed out at the media after a fuss over comments by President Donald Trump. He had spoken about the use of disinfectants against the coronavirus.
At a press conference, Trump raised the question of whether such agents can be used to fight the coronavirus in the body. That came to a lot of criticism.
The White House says the media is trying to put Trump in a bad light. “Leave it to the media to take President Trump’s statements out of context and come up with negative headlines,” said a spokeswoman.
“President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with their doctors about corona treatments,” the spokeswoman said in a statement. “He emphasized that again during yesterday’s briefing.”
Trump had referred to a study that found that the virus is killed in minutes using a disinfectant as a bleach. “The disinfectant turns it off in a minute,” Trump said. “Is there a way we can do something like that by injecting it? Almost like cleaning.”
Experts warned after that press conference that injecting disinfectant is life-threatening. Hillary Clinton, Trump’s former political rival, was also heard.
“Please don’t poison yourself because Donald Trump thinks it might be a good idea,” said the former Democratic presidential candidate on Twitter.
