A day before the elections in Greenland, Prime Minister Múte Egede once again expressed his concerns about the attitude of American President Donald Trump.
“We deserve to be treated with respect and I don’t think the American president has done that since he took office,” Egede said in an interview with Danish radio.
Greenland is a largely autonomous part of Denmark, but Trump has indicated he wants it. Last week, during a speech, he repeated that he wanted to add the island to the United States “in whatever way”. Trump acknowledged that the Greenlanders themselves decided on the future of the country.
A day after that speech, Egede wrote on X that Greenlanders do not want to be Americans or Danes. “We are Greenlanders. The Americans and their leader must understand that.”
Independence (from both Denmark and the US) is an important issue during Tuesday’s elections. Some parties want to call a referendum for this.
