After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wants to work with “all parties” to guarantee the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.
Rafael Grossi, chief executive of the nuclear watchdog, said IAEA personnel might be sent to Ukraine to monitor the safety of nuclear facilities.
Grossi added that he was unable to say anything about how the IAEA will assist in overseeing security. He said talks with the concerned parties are still ongoing.
The IAEA held an emergency meeting in Vienna on Wednesday to discuss the safety of nuclear power plants and the storage of nuclear waste in Ukraine. Great concern has been raised about, among other things, the site of the Chernobyl reactor that exploded in 1986.
According to the nuclear watchdog, more nuclear radiation has been measured since the start of the Russian attack last week, but it does not pose a threat to public health.
