Turkey Says There is No Ceasefire in Northern Syria

There is no ceasefire in northern Syria between Turkish-backed fighting groups and US-backed Kurdish militias. The Turkish Ministry of Defense has emphasized this after reports from Washington that this would be the case.

A military spokesman said that the Syrian National Army (SNA) will liberate the areas “occupied by the Kurdish militias”.

In northern Syria, some militias call themselves the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). They are supported by the US and are dominated by the Kurdish militia YPG. Ankara sees them as an extension of the PKK, the movement that is a terrorist for Turkey, among others.

The SNA is locked in a battle with Kurdish militia, and the fall of the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad on December 8 has likely fueled the fighting.
